Marist History

The word MARIST is composed of the first three letters of MARY’S name and the last three letters of CHRIST’S name.

You may begin by looking at Mary, but she always leads you to her son, Jesus Christ.

Jeanne Marie Chavoin – the Foundress of the Marist Sisters – was convinced that her specific mission was to found a feminine branch of the SOCIETY OF MARY (Marist). She envisaged Marist Sisters living a hidden life in the world, quietly helping to usher in God’s Kingdom.

Marists commit themselves to take this journey with Mary. They strive to:

  • Think as Mary would
  • Speak
  • Act
  • Feel as Mary felt towards all they meet along the road.

The Marist Sisters are an International Congregation and work in different parts of the world, serving the needs of people and being aware of the dignity of every human person, regardless of creed, race, sex or culture.
